The Bon Bons Social and Civic Club annually awards book scholarships to high school seniors who have been accepted to an institution of higher learning. This year, the club will award book scholarship opportunities to students who meet the following criteria:

- Must be African-American senior female

- Must have been accepted to a University, College or Technical School (must attach letter of acceptance with application)

Applications can be picked up in the Counseling Office and must be submitted on or before April 5, 2013 for consideration.

Rocky Branch Elementary is hosting Camp Invention, a weeklong summer program for children entering grades 1-6, from June 3 - June 7 and June 10 - June 14. High school students who are interested in working with elementary children and mentoring may be interested in working at the camps. This would be a great leadership experience for students to add to a a resume.

The southeast's largest career exploration event is the 2013 SKILLS Career Expo at the Georgia International Convention Center in College Park on March 21-22, 2013.  Not only will their be employers representing many different careers, students will also get to talk to students pursuing those careers.

The University of Georgia will be hosting a College Goal Georgia event on February 23^rd at 2:00pm in the Miller Learning Center, Room 150 located at 48 Baxter Street Athens, GA 30602. More information can be online at www.collegegoalsundayga.com.  College Goal will allow you to fill out your FAFSA with guidance and support from a trained professional.  You do not need to be planning to go to UGA to take adavantage of this program.

Any female students within our school that are unable to attend the prom due to financial hardships have an opportunity to submit an application for Cinderella Makeovers for prom and to receive a prom dress. Applications are due prior to the end of February and can be picked up in the Counseling Office.  This is sponsored by Friends of Advantage. Friends of Advantage is a 501C3 non-profit which directly assists Advantage Behavioral Health Systems in serving individuals with mental illness, developmental disabilities, addictive diseases, and homelessness.

 

The Janice M. Scott Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in October 2001 by the husband (Abraham) and family members of the late Janice Marie Scott to honor her legacy as a tremendous advocate for youth. Mrs. Scott was one of the 125 individuals who perished in the Pentagon on September 11, 2001.   Three to five scholarships in the amount of $2,500 will be rewarded to high school seniors this year. If a senior wishes to apply, he or she must complete the application and submit it along with other required documents. All required documents must be received or postmarked on or before the deadline date of March 31, 2013. Students must have a minimum GPA of a 3.0 to apply. Applications may be picked up in the Counseling Office.

 

The goal of the Furman Scholars program is to recognize students with the desire to learn, to know, to challenge, to connect, to solve. Students selected as Furman Scholars are eligible for at least $5,000 in scholarships upon acceptance into Furman University.

Current juniors who meet the following criteria may be nominated for this award:

 - A high school weighted GPA of a 3.5 or higher.

-A genuine interest in an education in the liberal arts and sciences.

-Significant involvement in extracurricular activities and community service.

-Demonstrated leadership potential.

-One of the following test scores: PSAT score of 120 or higher (critical reading and math); SAT score of 1200 or higher (critical reading and math); ACT composite score of 26 or higher.

Please see Mr. Guthas in the Counseling Office if you meet all of the criteria and are interested in being nominated. All nominations must be submitted by March 15, 2013.

Georgia Teens Ride With P.R.I.D.E.(Parents Reducing Injuries and Driver Error) is a FREE, National Award- Winning two-hour course designed to help parents and their new (or soon to be) teen drivers, ages 14-16, learn what they need to do during the 40 hours of supervised practice driving time required by Georgia law. This is not a hands-on, mechanical "how-to" course, but a class that addresses driving attitude and behavior of teenagers.

This course will:

-help parents become more aware of their own driving behaviors

-teach parents how to help their teenagers become safe drivers

-alter attitudes and driving behaviors of novice teenage drivers

 

Parents and teens must register and attend together.

All participants will receive a $50 discount coupon for upcoming driver's education courses!

Make plans now to attend the AP Parent Night/FYI Fair on Thursday, February 7 from 6:15-8:00.  We will have sessions about course offerings, teen driving laws, and joint enrollment opportunities among others.

The goal of the Julian and Jan Hester Memorial Scholarship is to assist deserving high school seniors in their first year of college and to promote community banking. The scholarship application is open to seniors who will be continuing their education in the Fall of 2013. Awards are based on merit, not financial need. At least (4) $1,000 scholarships will be awarded.   Applications may be picked up in the Counseling Office and are due to Kristi Greer at Oconee State Bank by 4:00 PM on April 5.

 

The Univision 34's "Liga de Campeones" Scholarship is designed to motivate Latino youth in the area to pursue higher education. Applicants must be bilingual (Spanish/English), have a cumulative GPA of a 3.0 or higher, must be of Hispanic descent and must reside in an area that receives the Univsion 34 signal.  Applications can be picked up in the Counseling office and must be postmarked by February 28, 2013. An essay and teacher nomination is also required for the application.

The primary purpose of the Oconee Lions Youth Citizenship Award is to recognize the achievements of two Oconee County High School graduating seniors who provide the evidence of the following criteria:  1. Good Citizenship, 2. An active interest in the civic, cultural, social and moral welfare of the community, and 3. A record of service to the community without personal financial reward.

The award is not intended to necessarily benefit students with "high" grade point averages. In the evaluation, consideration will be given to need, recommendations, personal achievements and a statement of the applicant's personal goals. Special weight will be given to community service accomplishments.

The amount of the award is $1,000 to each of two graduating seniors. Applications can be picked up in the Counseling office and must be turned in to Mr. Guthas by April 26, 2013.

 

The Peach State Credit Union scholarship is in honor of Dr. John Jackson, retired Superintendent of Oconee County Schools, for his contributions to the Oconee County School System. It will be awarded to an Oconee County Public School graduating senior pursuing a degree in education. Applications can be picked up in the Counseling Office. The deadline to apply is March 22, 2013.

OCHS and NOHS will co-host a representative from the Georgia Student Finanace Commision on Tuesday, January 15th at 6pm in the NOHS Fine Arts Auditorium. They will explain the ins and outs of the financial aid process as well as answer specific questions about finanacial aid and HOPE.

The Washington Youth Tour sponsored by Walton EMC is designed to make students better leaders and instill greater confidence. Sophmores and Juniors have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to participate in this exciting event. Students will have the chance to meet Georgia's U.S. Representatives and Senators, tour many sites in Washington and attend professional development workshops led by certified leadership trainers. The University of Georgia Young Scholars Program is a six week summer internship for high school students interested in science, agriculture, or engineering. Through the program, young scientists are given the opportunity to study within an agricultural field, such as entomology, food science, genetics, etc., and learn about applied science in agriculture. Students work side by side with a mentor, with whom they will interact on a daily basis to develop a research project and create a presentation. At the end of the program, each participant presents their research and findings.

 

The goal of the Young Scholars Program is to encourage outstanding high school students to explore new areas and pursue a future career in science.

As a high school student, you will have the opportunity to earn money for six weeks during the summer working with animals, plants, insects, machinery, scientific lab equipment, etc

 

The program is opened to students that have finished their sophomore year, juniors and seniors and are 16 years by June 1.  The program will be from June 3 to July 12, 2013.  Application deadline is January 31, 2013 – transcript and two letters of recommendation from science, math or agriculture teachers are required.  Visit the website for complete information: http://www.ysp.caes.uga.edu/

 

The purpose of The American Legion High School Oratorical Scholarship Program - "A Constitutional Speech Contest" - is to develop a deeper knowledge and appreciation of the Constitution of the United States on the part of high school students. Other objectives of the contest include the development of leadership qualities, the ability to speak and think clearly and to prepare for acceptance and duties of American citizenship.

 

Scholarship awards are presented to three finalists in the final round of the national contest. The first place award is $18,000; second place is $16,000 and third place is $14,000. Each state winner who is certified into and participates in the national contest will receive a $1,500 scholarship.
