The Legacy Student Scholarship sponsored by Peach State Credit Union will be offered again this year. This scholarship is to honor the legacy of past and present board members and employees who have served Peach State Federal Credit Union for 20 years or more. It is awarded to graduating high school seniors who will be attending college to pursue a degree in education and plan to return to Georgia to teach.  Applications for the scholarship can be picked up in the counseling office. The application deadline to the credit union office is March 20, 2015.

Peach State Federal Credit Union is again sponsoring the Dr. John Jackson Student Scholarship. This scholarship is in honor of Dr. John Jackson, retired Superintendent of Oconee County Schools, for his contributions to the Oconee County School System. It will be awarded to an Oconee County Public School graduating senior pursuing a degree in education.  Applications can be picked up in the Counseling Office and are due back to the credit union office by March 20, 2015. The scholarship amount is $2,500.

The Oconee Little League will recognize and award outstanding seniors who have the love of the game of softball/baseball by providing a scholarship towards educational costs at an accredited college, university or technical school. There will be five scholarships awarded in the county between the high schools. All high school seniors that have played baseball/softball at least two years of their high school career and reside in Oconee County will be eligible to submit an application. Any student having received a full, four-year college scholarship is not eligible to apply. Applications can be picked up in the Counseling Office and are due to the Oconee Little League by January 31, 2015. No exceptions will be made for late applications.

A partnership between Ronald McDonald House Charities and its local Chapters opens the door to higher education for graduating seniors. The RMHC Scholarship Program seeks to invest in students who are exemplary role models in their communities and have the initiative to fulfill their educational goals. Each year, 60-70 of the brightest and most motivated students are sought out to participate in the Georgia College and State University Honors Program. A minimum high school GPA of a 3.5 along with a minimum SAT score of 1200 or 26 ACT score is required. Applications located at www.gcsu.edu/honors/application.htm must be received by February 1 for priority consideration and March 1 for regular consideration.

For four decades, the Boston University Trustee Scholars Program has attracted students from around the world with outstanding academic ability and the potential to inspire fellow students to excel. Next fall, BU will welcome 15 new Trustee Scholars. Trustee Scholars rank at the top of their classes and demonstrate exceptional leadership in their schools and communities. Fall is coming and so is the annual Mercer University School of Engineering Scholarship Challenge. Mississippi State University will be hosting two Fall Preview Days this semester for seniors. The dates are October 13 and October 27. The cost is $10.00 per person and space is limited. The Athens Area Human Relations Council, Inc. will soon be selecting students to receive scholarships at their annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Awards Banquet. Graduating 2015 seniors are encouraged to apply. The application deadline is November 1, 2014. Please apply early as you must also gather two recommendations as well as  complete a short essay. Most of the scholarships will be worth $500, but a few will go up to $1,000.

Two high school juniors and two seniors from the state of Georgia will be selected for the intensive week-long educational United States Senate Youth Program. The purpose of Youth Leadership Oconee is to provide opportunities for young adults to develop leadership skills and the community awareness necessary to address challenges facing Oconee County. 10th and 11th grade students at OCHS who want to further their leadership skills and channel those skills towards helping others and improving their community are invited to apply. The Watson-Brown Foundation, Inc. supports historic preservation in part of its Junior Board of Trustees, a talented group of seven - thirteen high school students whose exclusive mission is to preserve local history. The Junior Board of Trustees devotes many hours of time to meetings, research, interviews, and site visits in the field of historic preservation.  More information and applications to become a member of this board can be picked up in the Counseling Office. The selected students must have exhibited a capacity for service and leadership, as well as academic excellence, and who will embrace the challenges of a rigorous academic curriculum. Students who have exhibited qualities that embody the essence of the Danforths - maturity, strong moral character, selflessness, and commitment to community will be favored upon. A Service Academy Day will be held on Saturday, September 6 at Georgia Military Academy. The event will be held from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM. Stanford University will select the finest students from across the country to participate in its summer programs for high school students. The summer programs offer highly motivated and intellectually curious students the opportunity to explore and discover topics not typically taught in secondary schools. The Athens Area Retired Educators Association is offering two, $500.00 scholarships to two senior OCHS students. The characteristics of the selected student will be based on the following:
 1. Great personal qualities (personality, perseverance, morals, dedication, etc.)
2. Breadth of school activities
3.Volunteerism/community participation/work experience
4. GPA
5. Humanness
If you are interested in being nominated, please have a teacher, counselor or administrator write a recommendation on your behalf. The recommendation should include the areas mentioned above. Please have your nomination papers in to the Counseling Office by March 19.

High school juniors who have demonstrated superior academic excellence and have a potential for future success can be nominated for the prestigious Presbyterian College Fellows Award.  Juniors nominated must be in the top 10 percent of the class with a weighted GPA of a 3.6 or higher. The student must also have a SAT score of 1100 or higher (math and critical reading) or 24 ACT composite score or higher.  Selection as a PC Fellow grants students consideration for scholarships to Presbyterian College. The Education Foundation of the Oconee County Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce that $500 scholarships will be offered to one graduate from each of the five high schools in Oconee County.  Applications can be picked up in the counseling office and are being accepted between February 24 and April 3. The student must be a senior pursuing post-secondary education at either a two-year of four-year educational institution in the summer or fall of 2014.

The Oconee County Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce that scholarships will be awarded to graduates from each of the five high schools in Oconee County who will be attending a Technical and/or Vocational School after graduation.  Applications can be picked up in the Counseling Office and are due by April 3, 2014 to the Chamber of Commerce Office. The applicant must be a senior who is pursuing post-secondary education at a technical and/or vocational institution in the summer of 2014.

Wofford proudly announces the 66th annual Wofford Scholars Program. Qualified candidates are eligible to compete for scholarships ranging from $3,000 per year to a full scholarship, which is valued at $45,000 per year. 
Juniors who are ranked in the top 10% of the class, have a minimum score of 1250 on the PSAT or SAT, or 28 composite on the ACT/PLAN test may be nominated. Athens Regional Medical Center's Volunteer Services Department is now accepting inquiries regarding their Teen Volunteer Program for the summer of 2014. U.S. Congressman Paul Broun, M.D. (GA-10) invites all high school students in Georgia’s 10th Congressional District to participate in the 2014 Congressional Art Competition. Congressman Broun, in collaboration with Georgia Square Mall, will host a ceremony for all participating students on Saturday, May 3rd. This event will include a display of all artwork entries, and Congressman Broun will announce this year’s first place entry as well as the runners up. The winning artist will be invited to a national reception in Washington D.C. where his or her artwork will be on display for one year in the U.S. Capitol. Additionally, the student will be eligible to receive a collegiate art scholarship.

The competition is open to Georgia’s 10th Congressional District students in grades 9-12. Each participating student must fill out a Student Release Form and comply with the Competition Guidelines, which can be found on Congressman Broun’s website at www.broun.house.gov/kids/art.htm. Graduating students who plan on pursuing a college major in Agriculture, Natural Resources or related field are invited to apply for the Polly Hardigree Ward Memorial Scholarship. Applications can be picked up in the counseling office and must be postmarked by May 5, 2014.

In an effort to provide quality educational programs, services and opportunities, Darton State College is pleased to offer academic scholarships to incoming freshmen that have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement. The scholarship is worth the total cost of in state tuition and mandatory fees for Fall and Spring semesters. The application deadline is March 15, 2014.
 
The student selected must have a minimum core GPA of a 3.0. The student must also have a minimum combined score of a 1000 on the SAT (critical reading and math) or ACT composite score of 22.
 
Applications can be picked up in the counseling office. There is also an essay component to the application along with two letters of recommendation.

The primary purpose of the Oconee Lions Youth Citizens Award is to recognize the achievements of two OCHS graduating seniors who provide evidence of the following criteria: (1) good citizenship, (2) an active interest in the civic, cultural, social and moral welfare of the community, and (3) a record of service to the community without personal financial reward.
 
The award will be public recognition and a scholarship for post-secondary education. The amount of the award is $1,000 to each of two graduating seniors. Special weight will be given to community services accomplishments.

The Office of Student Financial Aid (OSFA) at the University of Georgia will host a College Goal Georgia event Saturday, February 15, 2014. The goal of this event is to assist high school seniors and college students in filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). 

All graduate and undergraduate students must complete the FAFSA process after January 1 of each year in order to receive consideration for Federal Financial Aid (including Federal Grants, Federal Loans, and the Federal Work Study Program) for the upcoming academic year. 

What You Should Bring With You to this Event: 

  • Your Social Security Number 
  • Your parents’ Social Security numbers if you are a dependent student
  • Your driver’s license number if you have one 
  • Your Alien Registration Number if you are not U.S. Citizen 
  • [2013] Federal tax information or tax returns including [2013] IRS W-2 information, for you (and your spouse, if you are married), and for your parents if you are a dependent student*** 
  • IRS 1040, 1040A, 1040EZ Foreign tax return, or Tax return for Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Marshall Islands, the Federal State of Micronesia, or Palau 
  • Records of your untaxed income, such as child support received, interest income, and veterans noneducation benefits, for you, and your parents if you are dependent student*** 
  • Information on cash; savings and checking account balances; investments, including stocks and bonds and real estate but not including the home in which you live; and business and farm assets for you, and for your parents if you are a dependent student

High School seniors who are applying to college and current college students who need assistance filling out the FAFSA. Both UGA and non-UGA students are welcome to attend this event!

The Berry College Student Enterprises will be hosting the second National Student Enterprise Development Conference on February 7th-8th, 2014. As you may know, we currently have 14 student-operated enterprises on the Berry College campus, that generated $432,000 of gross revenue last fiscal year and provided meaningful work opportunities for 140 students.

Last year, Alan Bridges of Coca-Cola and Frederiek Toney of Ford Motor Company were the keynote speakers and we will have nationally known industry leaders as speakers again this year. We will also have insightful break out sessions including Strategic Planning, Risk Management, Customer Service, Marketing, Accounting/Finance, and Start-Up Processes.
The purpose of this conference is to educate and inspire students from across the nation to develop an entrepreneurial spirit and learn practical business skills in order to prepare them for the future. Please share this information with other faculty and business organizations on campus who might be interested. Camp Magik is pleased to announce its 2014 spring schedule of healing camps for children and teens. Camp Magik (Mainly About Grief In Kids) serves children who have experienced the death of a parent, sibling or other close family member within the past three years. Camp Magik will provide an opportunity for children and teens to meet, talk, and process their grief with professional grief counselors. High school representatives, students and their parents can learn about the college admissions process and how to apply for scholarships and financial aid at the fifth annual “Colleges in Your Backyard” event hosted by the University of Georgia Office of Undergraduate Admissions on January 19, 2014 from 3-5 p.m.in the UGA Chapel (North Campus).

The event, which is free and open to the public, will feature a panel discussion with representatives from the UGA Office of Undergraduate Admissions and Office of Student Financial Aid as well as representatives from Athens Technical College, Piedmont College and the University of North Georgia.

mini college fair in Terrell Hall, where the UGA Office of Undergraduate Admissions is located, will immediately follow the panel discussion and will include an opportunity for students and parents to receive additional information on each of the represented colleges and ask questions.

Free parking will be available in the North Campus Parking Deck, located on South Jackson Street across from Terrell Hall.

In an effort to aide area high school students in their academic performance, the In Touch Management Group Youth Academy will kick off on Saturday, January 25, 2014 at the Athens Regional Library. Six students from OCHS in grades 9-11 may be nominated to attend.
 
It is the intent of the Academy to close the gap of the educational divide of those on the outside looking in. There is no fee to participate. The Academy will host a series of monthly weekend classes, lectures, guest speakers and field trips.
 
If you are interested in learning more, please see Mr. Guthas in the Counseling Office. Students must have a minimum 3.0 GPA to be nominated. Meetings will be held at Athens Regional Library on the following Saturdays:

Students selected as Furman Scholars are eligible for at least $7,500 per year for over four years in scholarships upon admittance into Furman University. Furman Scholars are also eligible for a $200.00 discount on their week-long, residential Summer Scholars program, which provides talented rising juniors and seniors with a glimpse of the Furman experience. Juniors who have a weighted GPA of a 3.5 or higher may be nominated. The junior student must also demonstrate leadership potential, have significant involvement in extracurricular activities/community service and have a genuine interest in an education in the liberal arts and sciences. One of the following test scores: PSAT score of 120 or higher (critical reading and math); SAT score of 1200 or higher (critical reading and math); ACT composite score of 26 or higher must be obtained also.
 
All nominations must be nominated by March 15, 2014. Please see Mr. Guthas in the Counseling Office if you meet the criteria and would like to be nominated.

The Julian and Jan Hester Memorial Scholarship Fund is supported by the Community Bankers Association of Georgia. All high school seniors are eligible to compete for this scholarship if they are planning to enter a Georgia post-secondary institution.
 
The scholarship is named after long-time CBA Chief Executive Officer, the late Julian Hester and his late daughter, Jan Hester. Jan was a senior at The University of Georgia when she died in an automobile accident on April 15, 1990. At least (4) $1,000 scholarships will be awarded.
 
Applications can be picked up in the Counseling Office and are due to Oconee State Bank on April 4, 2014.

Walton EMC is offering scholarships again for the 2014-2015 college school year. In the spring of 2014, approximately 30 scholarships to graduating high school seniors whose primary residence is served by Walton EMC will be awarded. Each scholarship will be worth $4,000 to students who best demonstrate the EMC spirit of community, hard work, service and perseverance.
 
If you are a senior and your home is serviced by Walton EMC, please pick up an application in the Counseling Office. An outline, high school transcript, two letters of recommendation and a copy of a college acceptance letter are required along with the application form. The application deadline is February 14, 2014.

Walton EMC is offering sophomores and juniors a once in a lifetime opportunity through its annual Washington Youth Tour. Students will be able to meet Georgia's U.S. representatives and senators as well as see the sites of Washington. Personal development and leadership activities will take place throughout the week as well. All sophomores and juniors who live in or attend school in Walton EMC's service area are eligible to apply. The dates this year are June 12-19.
