Since 1958, the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) conference has been providing youth with transformational leadership training that truly provides a life-changing experience. Every spring, nearly 10,000 students nationwide join one of the 70 State Leadership Seminars.  One sophomore from OCHS may be selected to attend the 2016 HOBY seminar this school year. If you are a high school student who is making a difference in the community through volunteer work, you may be interested in applying for the Prudential Spirit of Community Award. Please visit http://spirit.prudential.com orwww.nassp.org/spirit to access the online application. Your community service project (s) must have occurred at least in part after September 1, 2014.  The deadline is November 3, 2015. One student will be selected from the school. In each state and Washington, D.C., a top applicant will be named and will receive an award of $1,000. The top applicant will also receive an all expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. on April 30-May 3.

The Athens Area Human Relations Council, Inc. is sponsoring informational workshops on completing college and scholarship applications. There will be a workshop at the Oconee County Library on Tuesday, September 22 from 5:30-6:30 PM. There will also be one held in Athens at the Athens-Clarke County Library on Tuesday, September 29 from 5:30-6:30 PM.

The Lyceum Scholars Program, an initiative at Clemson University, is now accepting applications for fall 2016. Students accepted into the Lyceum Scholars Program receive $10,000 scholarships, which are distributed over their four years at Clemson University.
Lyceum Scholars study the moral, political, and economic foundations of a free society. In addition to receiving a scholarship, students in the Lyceum Scholars Program are paired with a faculty mentor (Socratic tutor), who guides their intellectual development throughout the program. The Mercer School of Engineering Scholarship Challenge gives students a chance to compete for Mercer scholarships. The event is scheduled for November 14th at Mercer's Macon campus. Students will participate in the challenge exam, tour engineering labs and tour the campus. Parents will also be able to learn about the program on that day as well. Discover Berry is an introductory event for high school or transfer students and families. Discover Berry offers a snapshot look at life at Berry College. You will attend information sessions, meet with students and take a walking tour of the beautiful campus.  The dates for Discover Berry this Fall are September 19, October 24 and November 21. Nominations are now being accepted for the National Youth Leadership Forums in both Medicine and National Security - Diplomacy, Intelligence and Defense. The nomination deadlines for both programs are September 25, 2015. The Athens Area Human Relations Council, Inc. will soon be selecting students to receive scholarships at their annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Awards Banquet in January. Senior students are encouraged to apply. Applications can be picked up in the Counseling Office and must be postmarked by October 31  with all supporting materials. The scholarship awards banquet will be held on January 16  at The Classic Center in Athens.

The John M. Belk Scholarship at Davidson College recognizes and rewards students of demonstrated superior intellectual and personal achievement and significant leadership ability. Up to eight Belk Scholars will be chosen in Davidson's Class of 2020, each receiving an annually renewable scholarship equivalent to the college's comprehensive fees ($60,119.00). OCHS may nominate one to two seniors for the Belk Scholarship. The nomination materials must be turned in to the Davidson office by November 6. Top senior scholar athletes may be nominated for the Class of 2020 Davidson College Bryan Scholarships. At Davidson, academic excellence comes first for all students. The Bryan Scholars Program honors scholar athletes who present outstanding academic records and are strong leaders both in the classroom and in their sport. Two Bryan Scholars, one male and one female, are chosen in each entering Davidson class. Football and Basketball sports are not eligible applicant sports.  OCHS may nominate up to three students for this prestigious award by Monday, September 21.
