The Athens Area Human Relations Council, Inc. invites your high school college-bound seniors to attend our Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Orientation which will be held on Wednesday, September 28, 2016 at 6:30 pmat the Athens Regional Library, 2025 Baxter Street, Athens. It is important to note that attendance is mandatory. In additional the student must include documentation of Community Service hours between August 2016 and November 30, 2016. All this information will be shared at the orientation. If a student cannot attend the orientation, he/she need not submit an application. Additional community scholarship information will also be shared. These scholarships are only awarded to students attending high schools in Oconee, Madison, Oglethorpe or Clarke Counties.

The Early College at The University of Alabama is accepting applications from highly motivated sophomore, junior and senior students who are prepared for the rigor of college study. Clayton State University offers a comprehensive scholarship opportunity for outstanding students, the Presidential Scholarship.  In addition to the HOPE scholarship and any other financial aid, Presidential Scholars receive:
·         An annual university grant of $3,000 (an approximate value of $12,000)
·         University housing for 4 years
·         A bookstore award of $250.00

The Presidential Scholarship recognizes students who have been truly exceptional, both academically and as student leaders, during their high school career. We seek to attract students who demonstrate the potential to make exceptionally strong contributions to the student body, both in the classroom and through extracurricular life on campus.  Our Presidential Scholars represent diverse intellectual, social, ethnic, and economic backgrounds. The Law Offices Of J. Lee Webb is pleased to offer the Family First Scholarship.  This scholarship is reserved for high school students nationwide and also current college students that plan on or are currently attending a 4-year college/university and are the first in their family to pursue a college education and degree.  Here are some brief notes about this scholarship:

  • Funds will be sent directly to the winner’s college or university 
  • Scholarship is a one-time award totaling $1,000
  • Scholarship applications MUST be submitted by May 31, 2017
  • A winner will be announced in July 2017

In an effort to promote greater awareness of careers in the skilled trades, Go Build Georgia (GBG), in partnership with the Go Build Georgia Foundation, will award Go Build Georgia High Demand Career Scholarships, through a partnership with the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG), to graduating high school seniors entering a TCSG institution in a field of study leading to a high-demand career in the skilled trades. The Go Build Georgia High Demand Career Scholarship is a $1,000 scholarship that is geared toward programs leading to careers deemed “high demand,” as identified through the Governor’s High Demand Career Initiative. These scholarships can work in concert with the Strategic Industries Workforce Development Grants (SIWDG) as they can be used to cover not only tuition, but may be used for requisite fees and materials.
Eligibility Requirements:  In order to qualify for a scholarship provided through the Go Build Georgia Foundation, an applicant must:
  1. Be a citizen of the United States and a resident of the state of Georgia;
  2. Be a graduating 2016 high school senior from a Georgia high school;
  3. Must be admitted to or enrolled in one of the Technical Colleges at the time of funding award, in one of the following program areas that prepare the student for a career identified through the Governor’s High Demand Career Initiative and that falls within one of the Go Build Georgia industries (manufacturing, telecommunications, energy, logistics or construction);
  4. Plan to enroll in a Georgia Technical College no later than Summer 2017;
  5. Demonstrate in an essay (500 words or less) how this scholarship will benefit the applicant and his/her future educational plans;
  6. Include a Letter of Recommendation from either a high school instructor, counselor or administrator, or a school or Go Build Georgia industry partner
  7. Provide a copy of the Technical College Acceptance Letter or class schedule; and,
  8. Should be registered in the GBG website database.

Application cannot be processed unless all required documentation is attached to application at the time of submission.   
Selection:  The Go Build Georgia Scholarship Selection Committee shall select and notify the scholarship recipient. The Go Build Georgia Foundation will notify the student’s college of the award and will remit funds awarded directly to the college.
Award:   Scholarship will be awarded in the amount of up to a maximum of $1,000 per student to be used within one academic year. The funds will be sent to the Technical College to be applied to the student’s account. Funds are to be used for tuition, books, requisite fees, or program supplies.  Funds must be used by the end of the 2016-2017 Academic Year. The number of scholarships awarded will be determined by funding available each fiscal year.
Deadlines:   
Scholarships will be awarded three times each year in Spring, Summer and Fall. The deadlines for applications are as follows: June 15 (Fall), November 15 (Spring), March 15 (Summer).

The Georgetown Club of Georgia sponsors a writing contest for high school juniors in an effort to encourage students to think broadly and analytically about global issues. The Georgia High School Writing Contest challenges students to tackle real issues that require creative solutions and unique perspectives. The first place recipient will receive $1,000. This year the Athens Area PROBE Fair College Fair will be held next Wednesday, September 14, 2016 at the Classic Center from 6-8 pm. We are anticipating admissions representatives from over 100 colleges and universities from across the U.S. to be in attendance this year.    
This will afford students and parents in the Northeast Georgia area an excellent opportunity to see and learn more about a wide variety of institutions in one evening. Students are encouraged to pre-register for the Athens PROBE College Fair in advance at http://gotocollegefairs.com/ While pre-registration is not required, doing so will give each student a unique bar code allowing college representatives to quickly capture their information during the fair and leave more time for productive conversations with college representatives. Students can then receive timely information about admissions, scholarships and financial aid, and visitation days.

Students in all grade levels may be interested in an essay contest entitled, "My Responsibility to America." The contest is sponsored by the VFW and the State winners will receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. The national winner will receive a $30,000 scholarship. Entry forms can  be picked up in the Counseling Office. The deadline for submission is November 1.

The Envision Program provides students with opportunities to attend conferences related to a field of interest. Popular programs attended in the past have been the National Youth Leadership Forum in National Security and the Forum in Medicine. You must be nominated to attend, and the deadline to be nominated is September 23rd.

Experience Reinhardt, an event designed for high school juniors and seniors, will take place on Saturday, October 1;Saturday, November 19; and Saturday, March 18 this school year. On these days, interested students in Reinhardt University will be able to talk with current students, tour the campus, and meet faculty members as well. Also, individual campus tours are offered Monday - Thursday at 11:00 AM or 3:00 PM. Duke University is hosting a Discover Duke event on September 18 at 1:00. The event will take place at Lambert High School - 805 Nichols Rd., Suwanee, GA 30024.  Duke admissions officers will present information and answer questions about the university, the admissions process, financial aid, and much more.
