Graduating students who plan on pursuing a college major in Agriculture, Natural Resources or related field are invited to apply for the Polly Hardigree Ward Memorial Scholarship. Applications can be picked up in the counseling office and must be postmarked by May 5, 2014.

In an effort to provide quality educational programs, services and opportunities, Darton State College is pleased to offer academic scholarships to incoming freshmen that have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement. The scholarship is worth the total cost of in state tuition and mandatory fees for Fall and Spring semesters. The application deadline is March 15, 2014.
 
The student selected must have a minimum core GPA of a 3.0. The student must also have a minimum combined score of a 1000 on the SAT (critical reading and math) or ACT composite score of 22.
 
Applications can be picked up in the counseling office. There is also an essay component to the application along with two letters of recommendation.

The primary purpose of the Oconee Lions Youth Citizens Award is to recognize the achievements of two OCHS graduating seniors who provide evidence of the following criteria: (1) good citizenship, (2) an active interest in the civic, cultural, social and moral welfare of the community, and (3) a record of service to the community without personal financial reward.
 
The award will be public recognition and a scholarship for post-secondary education. The amount of the award is $1,000 to each of two graduating seniors. Special weight will be given to community services accomplishments.
 
Applications can be picked up in the counseling office and must be turned in by 3:00 PM on Friday, April 25, 2014.

The Office of Student Financial Aid (OSFA) at the University of Georgia will host a College Goal Georgia event Saturday, February 15, 2014. The goal of this event is to assist high school seniors and college students in filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). 

All graduate and undergraduate students must complete the FAFSA process after January 1 of each year in order to receive consideration for Federal Financial Aid (including Federal Grants, Federal Loans, and the Federal Work Study Program) for the upcoming academic year. 

What You Should Bring With You to this Event: 

  • Your Social Security Number 
  • Your parents’ Social Security numbers if you are a dependent student
  • Your driver’s license number if you have one 
  • Your Alien Registration Number if you are not U.S. Citizen

The Berry College Student Enterprises will be hosting the second National Student Enterprise Development Conference on February 7th-8th, 2014. As you may know, we currently have 14 student-operated enterprises on the Berry College campus, that generated $432,000 of gross revenue last fiscal year and provided meaningful work opportunities for 140 students.

Last year, Alan Bridges of Coca-Cola and Frederiek Toney of Ford Motor Company were the keynote speakers and we will have nationally known industry leaders as speakers again this year. We will also have insightful break out sessions including Strategic Planning, Risk Management, Customer Service, Marketing, Accounting/Finance, and Start-Up Processes.
The purpose of this conference is to educate and inspire students from across the nation to develop an entrepreneurial spirit and learn practical business skills in order to prepare them for the future. Please share this information with other faculty and business organizations on campus who might be interested. Camp Magik is pleased to announce its 2014 spring schedule of healing camps for children and teens. Camp Magik (Mainly About Grief In Kids) serves children who have experienced the death of a parent, sibling or other close family member within the past three years. Camp Magik will provide an opportunity for children and teens to meet, talk, and process their grief with professional grief counselors. High school representatives, students and their parents can learn about the college admissions process and how to apply for scholarships and financial aid at the fifth annual “Colleges in Your Backyard” event hosted by the University of Georgia Office of Undergraduate Admissions on January 19, 2014 from 3-5 p.m.in the UGA Chapel (North Campus).

The event, which is free and open to the public, will feature a panel discussion with representatives from the UGA Office of Undergraduate Admissions and Office of Student Financial Aid as well as representatives from Athens Technical College, Piedmont College and the University of North Georgia.

mini college fair in Terrell Hall, where the UGA Office of Undergraduate Admissions is located, will immediately follow the panel discussion and will include an opportunity for students and parents to receive additional information on each of the represented colleges and ask questions.

Free parking will be available in the North Campus Parking Deck, located on South Jackson Street across from Terrell Hall.

In an effort to aide area high school students in their academic performance, the In Touch Management Group Youth Academy will kick off on Saturday, January 25, 2014 at the Athens Regional Library. Six students from OCHS in grades 9-11 may be nominated to attend.
 
It is the intent of the Academy to close the gap of the educational divide of those on the outside looking in. There is no fee to participate. The Academy will host a series of monthly weekend classes, lectures, guest speakers and field trips.
 
If you are interested in learning more, please see Mr. Guthas in the Counseling Office. Students must have a minimum 3.0 GPA to be nominated. Meetings will be held at Athens Regional Library on the following Saturdays:

Students selected as Furman Scholars are eligible for at least $7,500 per year for over four years in scholarships upon admittance into Furman University. Furman Scholars are also eligible for a $200.00 discount on their week-long, residential Summer Scholars program, which provides talented rising juniors and seniors with a glimpse of the Furman experience. Juniors who have a weighted GPA of a 3.5 or higher may be nominated. The junior student must also demonstrate leadership potential, have significant involvement in extracurricular activities/community service and have a genuine interest in an education in the liberal arts and sciences. One of the following test scores: PSAT score of 120 or higher (critical reading and math); SAT score of 1200 or higher (critical reading and math); ACT composite score of 26 or higher must be obtained also.
 
All nominations must be nominated by March 15, 2014. Please see Mr. Guthas in the Counseling Office if you meet the criteria and would like to be nominated.

The Julian and Jan Hester Memorial Scholarship Fund is supported by the Community Bankers Association of Georgia. All high school seniors are eligible to compete for this scholarship if they are planning to enter a Georgia post-secondary institution.
 
The scholarship is named after long-time CBA Chief Executive Officer, the late Julian Hester and his late daughter, Jan Hester. Jan was a senior at The University of Georgia when she died in an automobile accident on April 15, 1990. At least (4) $1,000 scholarships will be awarded.
 
Applications can be picked up in the Counseling Office and are due to Oconee State Bank on April 4, 2014.

Walton EMC is offering scholarships again for the 2014-2015 college school year. In the spring of 2014, approximately 30 scholarships to graduating high school seniors whose primary residence is served by Walton EMC will be awarded. Each scholarship will be worth $4,000 to students who best demonstrate the EMC spirit of community, hard work, service and perseverance.
 
If you are a senior and your home is serviced by Walton EMC, please pick up an application in the Counseling Office. An outline, high school transcript, two letters of recommendation and a copy of a college acceptance letter are required along with the application form. The application deadline is February 14, 2014.

Walton EMC is offering sophomores and juniors a once in a lifetime opportunity through its annual Washington Youth Tour. Students will be able to meet Georgia's U.S. representatives and senators as well as see the sites of Washington. Personal development and leadership activities will take place throughout the week as well. All sophomores and juniors who live in or attend school in Walton EMC's service area are eligible to apply. The dates this year are June 12-19.
