11th Grade – Next Friday is the last day your junior can sign up to take the PSAT!!!  Don’t let them miss out on this last chance to take this test!  Cost is $15 and students can sign up in the guidance office.


 


10th and 11th GradeYouth Leadership Oconee Applications are due to the Chamber of Commerce Office no later than Wednesday, September 30th.

September 23, 2009 - New Scholarships for Seniors

Grade 12 – New Scholarships


 


Presbyterian College offers a strong scholarship program in addition to its need-based aid program. In the fall of 2009, approximately 50% of the incoming freshman class received merit-based scholarships. Please visit www.presby.edu for more detailed information about those scholarships. All students who submit a completed admissions application by Nov. 15 will be considered for most merit based scholarships.


 


Senior students who are active in the community, have led a project that benefits others and have overcome personal challenges may be interested in applying for the AXA Achievement Scholarship. To learn more and apply, please visit www.axa-achievement.com. The application deadline is December 15, 2009.


 


MetroPCS is pleased to be continuing the MetroPCS Community Scholars Program for the seventh year. MetroPCS and Kyocera Communications, Inc. are awarding $2,500 scholarships to high school seniors who plan to continue education in college or university programs. In addition, one lucky winner will be awarded a $25,000 scholarship.  For more information and to apply, visit www.metropcs.com/scholarship beginning October 1. Students who are interested in applying will need to return the application materials postmarked no later than November 25, 2009.

College bound juniors may sign up for the PSAT through the end of the month in the guidance office and the cost is $15.  At that time, they will receive a brochure that lists all the colleges and corporations who award scholarships based on PSAT scores.  The brochure also includes a practice test.


 


Remember, this is their only chance to take the PSAT this year and it is $30 cheaper than taking the SAT just for practice.


 


Grades 9 - 10


 


Students received PSAT brochures this week in Warrior Period.  The brochure includes a practice test and other information about the test.   All freshmen and sophomores will take the test and will be given more information about it in the coming weeks.

ATLANA HAWKS POETRY SLAM CONTEST (High Schools) - Calling all high school students! The Atlanta Hawks Poetry Slam is a shout-out especially to you, an invite to turn your thoughts into verse and speak them aloud. Submit your written entry for the Atlanta Hawks Poetry Slam contest, sponsored by Walmart, by Nov. 15th and vie for a chance to spit your verse during a special Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration at the Hawks game on Monday, January 18th.  Grade 12 – New Scholarships



Boston University announces the 35th annual Trustee Scholarship Competition. This is a four-year, full-tuition scholarship to BU. The deadline to apply is December 1, 2009. For complete details, visit www.bu.edu/admissions/trustee.

 The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) is announcing its second annual "Freedom in Academia" student essay contest. One student will receive a $5,000 college scholarship. Grades 10-11 – Youth Leadership Oconee


 


Students can pick up applications for Youth Leadership Oconee in the guidance office.  This is a great program to improve leadership skills and learn about their community.  More information and applications can be picked up in the guidance office or downloaded from www.occoc.org.


 


Before applying, please review the program dates and attendance requirements. The application deadline is Wednesday, September 30, and all materials must be turned in to the Oconee County Chamber of Commerce.

Grade 11- Sign up for the PSAT


 


Any junior who wants to sign up for the PSAT needs to do so by the end of this month.  Remember that this is the best practice for the SAT because you get your test back and online practice linked to your weaknesses.  You or your student can sign up in the guidance office and the cost is $15.


 


Grade 12 – New Scholarship


 


The Georgia Association of Educators is offering the 2010 High School Senior Scholarship for future teachers. For more information and to apply, please visit www.gae.org.


 


Grades 9-12 – Essay Contest


 


The John F. Kennedy Library Foundation invites U.S. high school students to write an original essay on the political courage of a U.S. elected official. For contest information, registration, and to submit your essay online, visit the Profile in Courage Award Program at www.jfklibrary.org. This is open to students in all grade levels.

Grade 12 – New Scholarships


 


University of Virginia - The Jefferson Scholars Foundation of The University of Virginia invites OCHS to nominate one outstanding senior student into the competition for Jefferson Scholarships to the University of Virginia. The Foundation seeks to find high school seniors who possess exceptional ability in leadership and scholarship and who show promise of making a significant contribution to the University community. Please see Mr. Guthas in the guidance office by Friday, October 9 if you are interested in being nominated after visiting the website.


 


Davidson College - OCHS can nominate one outstanding senior student for the John Montgomery Belk Scholarship at Davidson College. This scholarship recognizes and rewards students of outstanding intellectual and personal achievement and significant leadership ability. Up to five Belk Scholars will be chosen in Davidson's Class of 2014, each receiving an annual renewable scholarship equivalent to the college's comprehensive fees. Please see Mr. Guthas in the guidance office by October 15 if you are interested in being nominated.


 


Suntrust Off to College - High school seniors can win a $1,000 scholarship for their first year expenses at a college or private career school through the SunTrust Off to College Scholarship Sweepstakes. One winner will be chosen every two weeks from October 30, 2009 through May 14, 2010.   Students can begin registering September 14, 2009, and the first drawing will be held on October 30, 2009. Wednesday, September 9 – PROBE College Fair at the Classic Center in Athens from 6:00-8:30 pm.  Over 100 schools from Georgia and the southeast will be represented.  This is a great time to start investigating options for your student.


 


Grades 9-12 – Prudential Spirit of the Community Awards


All students who have given generously as a volunteer in the community are invited to apply for the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards. Please visit http://spirit.prudential.com for more information and to apply online. The application deadline is November 2, 2009.


 


Grade 12 – Davidson Scholar

Grade 10-12 - Mercer Engineering Scholarship Challenge



OCHS can nominate up to three seniors to participate in the Mercer University School of Engineering Scholarship Challenge. This event will take place on November 7, 2009 in Macon, GA. The event will include campus and engineering laboratory tours, followed by a short program. In the afternoon, students will complete a scholarship challenge to help determine aptitude for engineering.
