American Legion Oratorical Contest - All students are invited to participate in the American Legion Oratorical Contest. First place prize winners will win $350.00. Advancement to the state level could lead to more money. The contest will be held on January 15. The prepared oration must be on some aspect of the Constitution of the United States with emphasis on the duties and obligations of a citizen to our government. Please let Mr. Guthas know in the guidance office no later than January 10 if you are interested in participating. More details will be given at that time.

New Scholarships

UGA is pleased to announce three new scholarships funded by the Goizueta Foundation for students with financial need and fluency in Spanish. Information and the application can be found at www.admissions.uga.edu/article/spanish

The goal of The Julian and Jan Hester Memorial Scholarship is to assist deserving high school seniors in their first year of college and to promote community banking. At least four $1,000 scholarships funded by the Community Bankers Association of Georgia and its membership will be awarded. Applications can be picked up in the guidance office and must be turned in to Oconee State Bank by April 1, 2011.

KFC Colonel's Scholars is looking for high school seniors with financial need and an entrepreneurial spirit to qualify for the KFC Colonel's Scholars Program. To qualify, you must have a 2.75 cumulative GPA and demonstrate financial need.   Applications will be accepted online from December 1 - February 9 at www.kfcscholars.org .

U.S. NAVAL ACADEMY- OPERATION INFORMATION 2010

November 21 – 24, 2010

 Athens Area High School and Middle School Students are cordially invited to take part in the U.S. Naval Academy Operation Information 2010 (OPINFO) by joining in an information session scheduled Thanksgiving Week.  The U.S. Naval Academy is the primary college through which exceptional high school graduates are trained as Navy or Marine Corps officers while earning a top notch baccalaureate degree free of tuition.   OPINFO is an opportunity for interested students to meet current US Naval Academy Midshipmen from the Athens area and learn about the world class academic, leadership and athletic education available at the U.S. Naval Academy by meeting directly with Midshipmen currently attending the Academy.   Our Midshipmen look forward to meeting you and sharing their personal experiences as students at the U.S. Naval Academy.

 Pour, Inc, a Georgia Non-Profit Corporation,in partnership with Athens Academy & TheConnecting Point in Bogart, is bringing a mobile pantry for families in need of groceries. After filling out a form, families will receive a FREE box full of groceries. First come, first served. You will only need to indicate your monthly income, number of children, adults and seniors in your household.

Walton EMC Scholarship - Walton EMC is pleased to offer senior students at OCHS a scholarship opportunity. In 1987, Georgia EMC established a scholarship fund in honor of Walter Harrison. Eight scholarships in the amount of $1,000 will be awarded for 2011.
 
In order to apply, the student's primary residence must be the household of an EMC member or EMC employee. A combination of need and academic ability will be used to determine the selected recipients. Applications and further details can be picked up in the guidance office. The application, along with all supporting data, must be received by Walton EMC no later than Monday, January 24, 2011.

UGA Young Scholars Program

The Young Scholars Program is a six week summer internship for high school students interested in science, agriculture, or engineering. Through the program, young scientists are given the opportunity to study within an agricultural field, such as entomology, food science, genetics, etc., and learn about applied science in agriculture. Students work side by side with a mentor, with whom they will interact on a daily basis to develop a research project and create a presentation. At the end of the program, each participant presents their research and findings.

The goal of the Young Scholars Program is to encourage outstanding high school students to explore new areas and pursue a future career in science.  As a high school student, you will have the opportunity to earn money for six weeks during the summer working with animals, plants, insects, machinery, scientific lab equipment, etc.

The program is opened to students that have finished their sophomore year, juniors and seniors and are 16 years by May 31.

 Application deadline is January 31, 2011 - transcript and two letters of recommendation from science, math or agriculture teachers are required.

Optimist Essay Contest

OCHS students are invited to participate in the Annual Optimist International Essay Contest. This contest gives an opportunity for students to voice their opinions, receive recognition, and to have the chance to receive a $6000 scholarship by winning at the Optimist International Level. Please see Mr. Guthas in the guidance office for contest rules and regulations. All essays must be submitted by January 11, 2011.

Robert C Byrd Scholarship

The Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship is a $1,500 award renewable for up to three additional years. You must be a legal resident of Georgia to apply and have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement. Only one senior may be nominated from OCHS for this scholarship. If you are interested in being nominated, please see Mr. Guthas in the guidance office by Tuesday, November 30.

Janice M Scott Memorial Scholarship Program

Seniors who have a GPA of a 3.0 or higher and whose parents combined income does not exceed $100,000 are invited to apply for the Janice M. Scott Memorial Scholarship Fund. Students must be a US citizen and have demonstrated leadership abilities through participating in community services or other extracurricular activities. Applications can be picked up in the guidance office and must be postmarked by March 31, 2011.
