The Athens Area Human Relations Council, Inc. invites area seniors to its 2018 Scholarship Orientation on Tuesday, September 25, 2018 at 6:00 pm at the Athens Regional Library, 2025 Baxter Street, Athens. AAHRC will soon be selecting students to receive scholarships at our 40th Annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Awards Banquet in January 2019.  To qualify, you must attend the orientation and be a high school senior attending high school in one of our member-represented counties: Clarke, Madison, Oconee, or Oglethorpe.  Applications and supporting materials (official transcripts, test scores, and letters of recommendation) must be post-marked by October 27, 2018.  Applicants will be notified of their status by December 2018.  

The Honors College at Georgia State University's application deadline for our Presidential Scholarship is November 15, 2018.  The earlier Presidential Scholarship deadline means that prospective students must also apply to Georgia State University by November 9, 2018 to be eligible for scholarship consideration.  The competitive Presidential Scholarship program recognizes incoming university freshmen who were leaders in their high schools with superior academic achievement, a commitment to service and inspiring personal qualities. The Class of 2022 Presidential Scholars boasted an average SAT score of 1431, ACT score of 32.5, GPA of 3.96.

The Joseph Schmittou Detachment #1083 of the Marine Corps League is accepting applications from graduating seniors. Applicants do not have to be planning on joining the Marines to apply.  The scholarship is for $1,000. Applications can be picked up in the counseling office and must be postmarked by April 15, 2019. 

There will be an information meeting for students interested in Dual Enrollment and their parents on Monday, September 24 at 6:00pm in the Civic Center.


This year the Athens Area PROBE Fair will be held on September 20, 2018 at the Classic Center from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. We are anticipating admissions representatives from over 100 colleges and universities from across the U.S. to be in attendance this year.  This will afford students and parents in the Northeast Georgia area an excellent opportunity to see and learn more about a wide variety of institutions in one evening. Students are encouraged to preregister for the Athens PROBE College Fair in advance at http://gotocollegefairs.com/.  While pre-registration is not required, doing so will give each student a unique bar code allowing college representatives to quickly capture their information during the fair and leave more time for productive conversations with college representatives. Students can then receive timely information about admissions, scholarships and financial aid, and visitation days.

The National Youth Leadership Forum: National Security - Diplomacy, Intelligence & Defense, will be held in Washington, D.C. in the summer of 2019. During six days of stimulating, hands-on experiences, students will learn about national security careers while enhancing communication, conflict resolution, and decision-making skills. This is open to students in grades 9 - 11. THE BELK SCHOLARSHIP - The John M. Belk Scholarship, Davidson’s flagship merit program, covers the comprehensive costs of attending Davidson (room, board, tuition and fees) –valued in 2018-19 at over $65,000.

THE BRYAN SCHOLARSHIP - The Lowell Bryan Scholarships are offered to two scholar-athletes (one woman and one man) in each entering class and valued at $35,000 annually.

Bryan Scholars are chosen on the basis of academic and personal excellence and potential for impact in their sport in Davidson’s NCAA Division I athletic program.

• Nomination Deadline (your school may nominate up to three students) – September 20, 2018.
• Nominees’ Admission Application Deadline – must be completed and received in our office no later than 5:00 p.m., October 15, 2018.

Finalists will participate in selection interviews on campus on October 28, 2018.

BOSTON UNIVERSITY TRUSTEE SCHOLARSHIP

The State of Georgia funds 42 scholarships each year to Georgia students that are interested in joining the Georgia Army National Guard and the University of North Georgia Corps of Cadets.  This means you can still have a full time job after graduating college while serving part time in the Guard!

Recipients of the University of North Georgia Military Scholarship (UNGMS) are even able to make $30,000 - $40,000 over four years as a Cadet.  The scholarship pays for room, meals, tuition, books, uniforms and fees.  The total worth of the UNGMS is over $70,000.  In recent years, just under 60 qualified and completed applications are received annually.

Army ROTC Scholarships are available nationally to Cadets who participate in a Senior Army ROTC program.  This scholarship differs from the UNGMS in what it covers: tuition and fees or room and board, up to $10,000.  It is important to realize that both scholarships require service in the U.S. Army after graduation.  

Additionally, Cadet Admissions awards Leadership Scholarships to incoming Cadets based on merit and financial need.  These scholarships range from $500-$3,000 and are funded by alumni donations to help off-set the cost of college for incoming Cadets.  For Georgia residents (not on UNGMS), they are also eligible for the Georgia ROTC and Future Officer Grant ranging from $1,500 to $4,000 a year.

This year Perfectly Polished is holding a class for high school students who have never taken our class.  The class consist of social skills, handshaking, eye contact, communication, body language and of course, dining etiquette. If your student might need a "little help"getting through those college interviews and/or getting a job, this class might be  perfect for them. It is a 10 week class at the Oconee Chamber of Commerce in Watkinsville beginning Wednesday, August 15 for 10 weeks from 4:45-5:45. The Drew Swan Sibling Scholarship is a one-year, non-renewable $1,500 award for a sibling of an individual with a disability, contingent upon acceptance or enrollment in a two-year or four-year nonprofit higher education institution. All interested applicants must be: 

• The sibling of an individual with a developmental disability
• Enrolled or accepted into a nonprofit higher education institution 
• In pursuit of a 2- or 4-year undergraduate degree
• Attending or planning to attend school at least part-time
• Willing to provide additional documents as requested by the selection committee
