The Athens Area Human Relations Council, Inc., is a citizen-based not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting positive and unified human relations in the Athens area as well as abroad based upon the philosophy, teachings, and works of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarships will again be awarded this year at the annual MLK, Jr. Banquet to graduating seniors. Up to three deserving high school seniors can be nominated for the Columbus State University Servant Leadership Program scholarship. The Servant Leadership Program is a four-year leadership program at CSU that focuses on leadership through service. The amount of the scholarship is $2,500 per year. In return, students have the opportunity to serve in a community agency during the fifteen week semester, mentor an at-risk child and go on leadership retreats. The Optimist Essay Contest is a good way for students to voice their opinions, receive recognition, and to have the chance to receive a $2,500 scholarship. The topic this year is, "How Dreams Lead to Success." The essays must be received by December 17, 2013. For complete details and an entry form, please see Mr. Guthas in the Counseling Office.
