Positive Behavior Supports (PBS) can help break the cycle that can include tantrums, running away or hurting oneself or others. The approach is based on 3 components, understand, prevent and replace. It begins with analyzing how problems behaviors can be functional (and how they may serve as a means of communicating or getting one's way). Caregivers can then develop plans to prevent the behavior by anticipating the individual's needs before the problem occurs and then begin to teach new behaviors to replace the problematic ones.
